Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chiropractic?

The word “chiropractic” comes from ancient Greek and means “done by hand.”

Adjustment of the joints of the body has been used in health care for many centuries and is at the heart of modern chiropractic care.

Chiropractors are specialists in manual adjustment of the vertebrae of the spine and other joints. Adjustment helps relieve pain and restore normal functioning to the spine, joints and supporting structures of the body – so you can enjoy your everyday activities again as quickly as possible.

Chiropractors are also trained to prescribe therapeutic exercise, provide nutritional counselling, and recommend rehabilitation and injury prevention strategies.

Does chiropractic care hurt?

Yes and no. There may be some discomfort around the injury being treated due to inflammation around the muscles or joints. Care is taken to minimize the discomfort so that you feel relaxed and comfortable while the doctor works to make you pain free.

Is chiropractic care covered by OHIP?

Chiropractic services are not covered under OHIP. However many extended health plans do cover a portion of chiropractic services.

Will I need X-rays?

X-rays can play an important role in diagnosis and are taken when a need has been determined after taking a patient case history and conducting a physical examination.

Each case is unique and will be discussed with the Chiropractor whether or not an Xray will be required

Do I need a referral from my medical doctor?

No. Chiropractors are legislated as primary contact health professionals in every province in Canada. This means that patients can consult them directly. However, chiropractors often work closely with medical doctors, many of whom refer to chiropractors when they believe chiropractic treatment will help alleviate a patient’s condition. Similarly, chiropractors frequently refer to medical doctors when necessary.

How long will I need chiropractic care?

The length of time you are under chiropractic care varies among individuals. After the chiropractor completes your physical assessment and establishes a diagnosis a Treatment Plan will be recommended to you.

Will the chiropractor recommend exercises for me?

Along with your Treatment Plan, your chiropractor will recommend alternatives to care, exercises and changes to your present lifestyle.

How long do the adjustments take?

The first visit lasts approximately 45 minutes. This allows time for the history taking and chiropractic examination and treatment. Each subsequent visit lasts approximately 20 – 30 minutes.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe?

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest, drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of headache, and neck and back pain. It has an excellent safety record.
